Not Free

I don’t code.

I don’t engineer.

I don’t cook.

I don’t plumb,

or build,

or sell.

I also don’t assume that when I need your services

You’ll do them for free.

For exposure.

For your portfolio.

For experience.

For nothing.

My creative work is,

Dare I say,

Valuable.

Just as is your work.

We have different skills.

Different ways of thinking.

Different outlooks.

Different perceptions of value.

Your time is as valuable

As mine.

Your skill is as valuable

As mine.

Your knowledge is as valuable

As mine.

We are all valuable.

We all have worth.

We all deserve to be treated accordingly.

If you do not like my work,

If you do not value my skills,

If my expertise isn’t what you are looking for,

If I am easily replaced with someone who

“Will work for free” because

“This is a great opportunity,”

Then perhaps you shouldn’t have

Asked me in the first place.

When my A/C goes out

I know I have to pay you.

When my car needs an oil change

I know I have to pay you.

When I need groceries

I know I have to pay you.

When your publication wants to use my work

Know that you have to pay me.

When your company wants a performance

Know that you have to pay me.

When your firm needs design work

Know that you have to pay me.

If my skills weren’t valuable to you

You would do it yourself.

Since we have different skills

But all have the same amount of time,

All have bills to pay,

All need food and a place to live,

We need to treat each other as we

Expect to be treated.

Your time,

My time,

Our time,

Is valuable.
